{Happy Holidays!}

I just wanted to let everyone know that the “Giving is Awesome” winner was contacted by phone on Christmas Eve.  Be looking for their photos sometime in the future.  I’ll be giving details about their story once I obtain permission.  It was a great phone call to make on Christmas Eve, and was definitely one of the highlights of my holiday season.  Thanks to everyone who nominated someone.  The decision was so hard, and I’ve kept everyone close in thought and prayer.

My Girls

I often feel like the stereotypical mechanic – you know how they always have time to work on everyone else’s car but their own? I rarely have time to take and edit photos photos just for myself or for my family. These photos were taken back in October, and I barely fit them in after a family session for a client one afternoon. I’ve just NOW had a bit of time to edit them, and prepare a slideshow for their mom.

Most of you know I do NOT have four daughters. These are my nieces. They are the closest thing I have to children. They moved in down the road from us two years ago, and it has been the biggest blessing to my heart and life. I love them each so much, and I can’t imagine them living back in Hebron. I get to see them all the time, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tabby, I miss you SO much this year. I really became accustomed to seeing you each and every day the last two years…having you so close…getting to to know you so well….being there for you….and in turn, you being there for me. You always brightened my day with just a laugh and a funny story, or your uncanny way of putting your unique spin on life – not having you around has put a void in my life that is not possible to fill. You’ve grown up so much, and I guess I feel understand a smidgen of what a mother goes through. I’m so proud of who you’ve become, and I want to keep anything and everything from hurting you. I know you’re doing a great job on your own. I love you with all of my heart.

Courtney, where do I begin with you?? I’ll never forget the very first time I met you. You were a wild and crazy 7 year old – pretending to be a belly dancer in your swim suit (sporting your water wings, too!) to impress your Uncle Don. You had the cutest little girl crush on him. I’ve never told your Uncle this, but I think watching how much you adored him, especially knowing how guarded you were toward most adults, made me fall even faster in love with him. I knew if you trusted your heart to him, I could, too. I remember doing a project with you for my college class – spending the day getting to know you. You were only in 2nd grade, and we had so much fun. Remember when I took you to school with me when I taught at Merrillville? Coaching you in 8th grade volleyball…..house shopping (remember wanting to save all of your birthday money to buy the $354,000 house???)…..you becoming my little assistant on shoots and throughout the busy times in my life….the memories are continuing to be made, and I’m so happy to truly know you now – to call you my niece, and to love you so much.

Oh, Alaina. My little headstrong, sweet and sassy, brilliant and happy girl. There are so many days I wish I was your 5th grade teacher this year. I wonder how much better I would know you? I know it is good you are not in my class this year, though, because it would most likely be impossible to treat you like “just one of my students”. You were the one who openly threw your arms around me the day you met me. You couldn’t get enough attention. You were either hugging me, stroking my arms, trying to sit on me, begging me to play barbies, or just holding my hand smiling right at me. You were so incredibly cute, and my heart melted instantly. Not much has changed since. I still have trouble saying no – and that’s probably a good thing. We’ve had so many fun times together. Modeling shoots, the fair, sleepovers, makeovers, games, and much more. You are so SMART, so excitable, and so sweet. I’m so excited to be able to watch you grow up. You still have my heart, and I’ll love you forever!

Ky. Ky, Ky, Ky. You continue to amaze me everyday. Be it your HILARIOUS poems, your use of big words like “nocturnal”, your never ending spunk, hilarity, and sweetness. I have had the pleasure of knowing you since you were only 6 months old, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. I love being your aunt, and I love all of our little adventures. You make me smile – always. I’m so glad I get to be a teacher in the school you are growing up in. You may not always like it at times, since I do check up on you. But, I hope in the end you’ll know I did it out of love and not out of a desire for you to have to pay your precious “Spagna Bucks”. :) Because, the truth is, I hear so much good and so very little bad. You are stunning in so many ways, and it seems everyone recognizes that in you.

Kylee’s most recent poem

My Mommy is Beautiful

My mommy is beautiful, sweet and goody.

My mommy is wonderful.

She always wears a hoody.

She’s sweet and she’s sour.

But mostly sweet.

My cat is always in heat.

My mommy is made of love and hearts!

Apparently, she slipped into Tabby’s room, swiped an index card, and then had this little gem whipped up in a matter of minutes. Oh, and just a little fyi – she personally told me that the “heat” part was added because it flares up her mom’s allergies, and it’s hard for her to breathe. Isn’t she a doll?!?!?

{Giving is Awesome} | Indiana Family and Child Photographer

**Updated to Add The Map of Awesomeness**

mapofawesome7

I would like to start by thanking Kristen Kalp of Essential Imagery for this truly awesome idea.  She is not only the brainchild behind this incredible giving idea, but she has encouraged photographers to donate this holiday season, AND she started this amazing website to track the donations of photographers all around the world!  Now, onto the awesomely awesomeness that is the heart of this season….the spirit of giving…..

You know someone. You know someone who’s experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can’t afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.  Who is that person?  I need your help!

We all know that custom photography is a luxury, not a necessity.  But, what is more important to us than our relationship with family and the precious memories that we create?  I can’t think of much else.  That is one of the reasons I choose to photograph families in the way that I do.  I want them to have a physical, constant reminder of their precious connection – the spirit of their family.  I want to give them something that will lift their spirits when they look at it.  I’d really like to give someone a chance to have that year long reminder.  And, I’d like to give it to someone who deserves it and could otherwise not afford to have it.  This is where you can help me.

I want to know who you think deserves a holiday “pick me up” of sorts , and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography – $2,000 worth, to be exact. Whether they choose a gallery-wrapped canvas, albums, prints for Grandma, or a slideshow to watch over and over . . . it’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season. Oh, and a little bonus? The person who nominates the winner receives a $500 print credit. What better reason do you need to show some love?

The rules:
1. You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar vacation home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)
2. The nominee must reside in Northwest Indiana or be able to travel here for their session. If your nominee lives outside the area, send me an e-mail, anyway. There are loads of incredible photographers partnering on this project and there’s sure to be one near you.
3. Comment on this blog entry to let me know you’ve entered and e-mail me the full story: samantha@samanthauphold.com. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve their life translated into art. Please include contact information for your nominee and yourself. The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve . . . get nominating! I can’t wait to read all of your entries!

Open your heart to someone this holiday season. And thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

{Better Late Than Never} | Indiana Baby / Newborn Photographer

This poor family’s sneak peek got lost in the middle of my crazy month.  Things are still insanely crazy and I’m wondering if I’ve lost my mind starting to settle back down, and I’m packaging up my final orders for Christmas Delivery!!!  :)  I have to give this gorgeous baby girl her due blog post.  I’m constantly amazed at what a small world it is, and this session was SO nice because I got to spend it with an old work buddy.  It was so good to see her and meet her two gorgeous children and incredibly laid-back husband (Michael, you deserve an award for what I put you through.  Seriously, I can only imagine the stories that will be told while little Miss E is growing up.  lol).
