It’s A New Day

What an amazing day for our country. What an incredible day to be an educator. The excitement was tangible today, even in the 5th grade classroom in which I teach. I was so happy to be able to witness this extraordinary moment of American history with my current students. Knowing that this moment will be recorded in the history books read by their children is a pretty cool thing. I had my camera there to document the moment and the overall excitement. Watching 60+ 5th grade students clap and cheer at all of the right moments during President Obama’s inaugural speech was priceless. Joining them in standing and singing our national anthem, looking forward with a sense of hope and commitment to making this world better, was an incredible moment and feeling that I will never forget.

I asked the kids to write how the felt after hearing Obama’s speech.  That was the only direction I gave.  The responses they came up with made me so proud from a teacher’s perspective -and excited from the perspective of an American.  :)

I do an activity in my class called “Song of the Week”, where we analyze figurative language in popular songs. Below is our song of the week. :)

The video below is for my students. They will understand why I picked this clip – so many reasons. ;)

January 21, 2009 - 9:45 pm Becky - Kaitlynn said she thinks it's "UBER COOL" that you posted this to your blog!

January 21, 2009 - 9:59 pm sammyv22 - Ah! Love it!! Tell her she's "uber cool" for remembering what "uber" meant. Although, after all of the over use of uber in our room, I doubt any of the kids will forget. So fun!

January 29, 2009 - 11:35 pm Jessica - I love that you did this! How cool. Your students are old enough to remember that moment well into thier adulthoods. I made the boys watch the inauguration with me. Although, they looked at me crazy when I was crying. However, I am proud to say that I may have Obama's biggest 3 year old fan. He keeps saying "Ba-ROCK O-BOMB-a keeps my big dad workin' hard!"

February 2, 2009 - 6:19 pm sammyv22 - I was totally tearing up, too! I had to keep it together, though. I have a feeling Jax & Jake would have understood more than 60+ 5th graders. Could you imagine? lol
